VOIP as Disruptive Technology

Disruptive technologies are the most interesting ones and we have one coming. It is called voice over IP (VOIP)…

Disruptive technologies break the mould and create what is now rather too often called a paradigm shift (see Thomas Kuhn for the original definition of this).

But we do have one coming … VOIP … …or to us non-techie types phone calls over the internet. Why is this disruptive? Well, it makes old ways of doing things redundant and new ways of doing things different and in a different way.

skype logo and info

The reason I’m talking about this now is that there was a very good article by Azeem Azhar in the Guardian that describes this all very well, so i’m loathe to precis it.

Early adopter hype? Maybe, but Skype (no, sorry, I don’t know how to pronounce it!) has been downloaded 11 million times. There is a lot of chasm to cross yet, but 11 million is a lot of bodies trying to make that bridge.

Suffice it to say that it will break companies, like BT, and it will humble others, like the mobile companies, and it will mean that the way we communicate will change forever … connected via peer-to-peer WIFI network back to your home PC to make a call over the internet? Skype already will work with your IPAQ, so maybe its as good a guess as any other …
